Version 1.0 · 12 September 2026 · Makairo2MandelaBay, Season 01
Read this before you sign up. It is short on purpose. If anything here is unclear, ask before you join rather than after.
1. Who you are dealing with
Makairo2MandelaBay is run by Reboot Republic and Makairo Studios, operating under Lolwe AI Ltd (company no. PVT-JZUAPXV2), registered in Kenya.
2. What you are joining
A datathon running 27–29 November 2026, and the season around it. You take part through a node — a city or campus with a convenor and a room. You can join an existing node or start one. Starting one needs a convenor, a room and five builders. It does not need our permission.
Taking part is free. It always will be.
3. What you build is yours
This is the part that matters most, so it is stated plainly and without conditions.
You keep every right to everything you make here. Your code, your models, your writing, your designs, your data work. All of it.
- We do not take ownership of it.
- We do not take a licence to commercialise it.
- We do not take exclusivity. You can enter the same work elsewhere, sell it, open-source it, or take it to an employer. You do not need to tell us.
- We do not get a right of first refusal, a first look, or any claim on what it becomes.
If you are a student, whatever arrangement exists between you and your university about coursework and intellectual property is unaffected by this. We are not a party to it and we do not override it.
The only thing you give us is permission to show that you built it — your name, your node, the title of your work and a link — on the board and in the record. Nothing more. Under section 33(3) of the Copyright Act 2001, a transfer of copyright in Kenya must be in writing and signed. This document transfers nothing, and no other document will be put in front of you that does.
4. What we hold about you
Only what you give us, and only what the event actually needs:
- your name, email and phone number
- your institution, if you have one
- your node
- what you told us you can build
- what you submitted, and when
- the fact that you accepted this document, on what date, and which version
That is the complete list. We do not track you across the web, we do not buy data about you, and we do not sell or rent any of it.
5. Who can see it
- You can see everything we hold about you.
- Your node convenor can see the builders in their own node, and nobody else's.
- The public board shows counts and rankings per node, and the names of people credited on work. It never exposes anyone's contact details.
This is enforced in the database itself, not merely by our own code being careful. A person who should not be able to read your record cannot read it, whatever mistake anyone makes later.
6. Leaving
You can leave at any time, and you do not have to say why.
When you do:
- we send you everything we hold about you, in a form you can open and keep;
- we delete your personal details — name, email, phone, institution;
- your credit stays. Your name remains on what you built, because you built it. If you want that removed too, say so and we will remove it.
Deletion is a right you have under the Data Protection Act 2019, not a courtesy we are offering. Write to the address in section 10 and we will act on it within thirty days.
7. What we cannot promise
We would rather say this now than have you discover it in November.
- We cannot promise you a job, a contract, an internship, funding, or an introduction.
- We cannot promise that anything built here gets deployed, bought, or used by anyone.
- We cannot promise a place at any node — a room has a capacity, and convenors run their own.
- We cannot promise the event is free of failure. Things will break. We will say so when they do rather than quietly working around it.
- We cannot act as your legal, academic or employment adviser.
8. Rewards
Season 01 carries rewards for builders. The figures are not settled at the time of this version, and we will not imply otherwise. They will be published in full — amount, what it is for, who decides, and when it is paid — before registration opens, and never after the fact.
No money passes through this platform. We collect nothing from you and you are never asked for payment details.
9. Conduct
Two rules, both enforced by removal from the season.
Claim only what is true. Do not present someone else's work as yours, do not report results you did not get, and do not overstate what your system can do. Saying what your work cannot do is not a weakness here; it is the standard.
Leave the room better than you found it. No harassment, no exclusion, no gatekeeping of people who arrived knowing less than you.
10. Changes, and getting hold of us
If we change these terms, the changed version gets a new number and a new date, and the version you accepted stays on record exactly as it was. We do not edit this document in place. Nothing in a later version reaches back and changes what you agreed to.
Questions, corrections, or a request to leave and take your data: terminal@rebootrepublic.com
These terms are governed by the laws of Kenya.
This is version 1.0. When you accept it, the exact text above is recorded against your name along with the date, so that both of us can see later what was actually agreed.
